Yet legislative means have recently been taken to subdivide the subdivisions. The "three acres and a cow", talked of so much in England some years ago must now stand aside in favour of the French "half an acre and a home." The enabling measuro is now law. What M. Ribot and the other promoters of the measure aimed at was to give working men in the towns and labourers in the country an opportunity to acquire on easy terms a plot of land and a modest homestead, arguing that this would bo a more practical kind of provision for the evening of life than any old ago pension fund. It was, indeed, while the Old Ago Pensions Bill was under discussion that tho idea occurred. Some of M. Ribot's constituents had suggestod that they would rather invest their savings in this 'way, and ho at once sought to secure them the option of setting aside their prospective pensions as part payment of the purchase money required to buy a plot of land and a homestead. The field or garden must not cost moro than £48, and its oxtenl; is limited for tho present to 25 ares, a little over half en acre. Tho intending purchaser must possess 240 francs (£9.125). If not he is holped by the State, and tho moment ho deposits tho money ho becomes proprietor of tho holding. He must undertake that ho or his children will cultivate it, and he must also insure his life. Tho State does not deal direct with the purchaser, but with an intermediary and guarantee company formed in each district. A capital of £4,000,000 has been sot aside for loans at 2 per cent., and each local company must have a capital of £8000, of which half is to bo held in reserve. Tho original idea was to provide town or country workers with a home when they had reached tho age of 50 or 60, out anyono who has saved one-fifth of the purchaso money—less than £10— can nt onco become the possessor of "half an acre and a homo." • PROPERTY SALES. Messrs. T. Mandcno Jackson will submit three valuable freeholds to public auction at their rooms, Custom-street East, at two o'clock to-day, as Two-storeyed residence of 10 room?, known as Elrndon, standing on two tind a-half acres of land, situated in Whittaker Place, oft" Symonds-street; a villa of five rooms and conveniences, standing on a'section with l)6ft frontage to Brighton Road, Parnell, by a depth of 180 ft; and a good business site having u frontage of 50.6 ft to Hobson-street, also a frontage of 50.8 ft. to Federal-street, with a through depth of 213.4 ft. A farm of 224 acres, more or less, at Kirikiriroa, will also be offered by order of the registrar of the Supreme Court. , DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE. .[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] . Dttnedis, Saturday. The market during the week has shown some improvement in investments, several stacks having exhibited a strong firming tendency. T,he Big River Company has declared another dividend, this time of Is, and prices wore in the vicinity of £2.
