BEFORE THE ABANDONMENT.
London, December 4.
Prior to the decision of Cabinet to abandon the measure, the Council of the Schools Protection Committee issued an** important manifesto urging all friends of national education to prevent ecclesiasticism securing the right of entry into Council schools.
Dr. Clifford declared that the Government had better fling the Bill to the winds rather than yield further.
The Daily Telegraph stated that a majority of the Cabinet was prepared to increase the grants to con-tracting-out schools by 2s 6d.
It was reported that the only optimists in the Cabinet were Mr.* Asquith and Mr. Ruriciman, while the others were indifferent, and some hostile to the compromise.
The Daily News declared that there would be no tears even if the Bill disappeared.
