THE EARTHQUAKES.
POSITION AT WHAKATANE.
CONDITIONS NORMAL AGAIN.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Whakatane, Saturday. The uneasiness among residents which the recent earth tremors occasioned is rapidly passing away. The disturbances have gradually diminished since Thursday, and it is anticipated that conditions will now resume their usual quiet state.
The s.e. Ngatiawa, which arrived in port from Opotiki, Ohiwa, and Whakatane on Saturday afternoon passed on the outward trip within two miles of Whale Island. Nothing of an unusual nature was observed by those aboard the steamer. On the return journey the vessel steamed to within a mile of Whale Island, when the atmosphere was quite clear and there were no signs of dust clouds.
