TIMBER TRADE DEPRESSION.
SOUTHERN MILLS CLOSING.

Masterton, Friday. Owing to the reduced demand for timber at the prevailing prices, it has been decided to close the sawmills for the time being. The owners of the mills in this district belonging to the Wairarapa Sawmillers' Association have notified employees that work will stopped in a few days. • A considerable number of joiners and carpenters are just now out of work, and depression in the building trade is being felt by tradesmen acutely.

Invercargill, Friday.
In accordance with a resolution passed last month the sawmills in Southland will be closed down to-morrow. About 35 mills, employing upwards of 700 men, will be affected. The mills*are. being dosed this year about a fortnight earlier than usual, in consequence of slackness in trade. The date of reopening has not been definitely fixed.
