FIRE NEAR CHRISTCHURCH.
SOAP WORKS DESTROYED.

Christchttrch, Thursday. A large old wooden building at Sockburn, ue««l as a soap factory by Mr. W H. Downer, was totally destroyed by fire during the early hours of yesterday morning. The building contained 40 barrels ol tallow (30 barrels ot which were saved), a quantity of soap and resin, also machinery and plant, the whole, with the buildings, being valued at £1000. The outbreak is supposed to have originated in the vicinity of the boiler, the fire of which was left banked up as usual for the night. The building and etock were insured for £650 in the Liverpool, London, and Globe office.
