; DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL. At the meeting of the DovOnport Borough : ; Council on Tuesday there were present :| The Mayor (Mr. W». Handloy) and Messrs. D. W. McLean, W. U. Timowcll, G. Gribbin, T. Craneh, J.', Osborne, H. Wilding, and Captain Geo. - McKcnzio. A deputation, headed by Mr. W. iSwiwierton, waited on, * ,tho Council and,urgod that it should erecfi skids," say, 12ft in width, on tho foreshore, off Garden Avenue, for the bonefit o£. yachtsmen and others within tho borough. Mr. Swinnerton said that' boat owners were at a great disadvantage at present in having to haul their boate over the rocks, and ha suggested that a too bo built at tho top end, of the "skids" for the • dinghies. Severn? owners. had expressed their willingness to pay for the convenience of such a structure, and he asked that? tho Council erect tho same, as they were desirous that it should i? r the benefit of all. The Mayor said that a. similar application had oomo before the Council somo time ago, but ho did not know how the present body would view elm matter. The questionwwa r referred to tho estreats and Works Committee. On the recommendation of tho Streets and Works Committee tho request of the Tennis Club that a fence bo erected on the club's proporty was gran tod. Tho cost of the work ia ' estimated at £23 6s, of which amount £lli 15s will bo paid by the olub.

EDEN TERRACE ROAD BOARD. The ordinary meeting of the Eden Tei*> race Road-Board, held ori Tuesday, was'&& , tended by the chairman (Mr. J. H. Garrott), Messrs. W. H. Hasktt, J. A. Brown, H. , Clayton, and R. MdElwain. The secretary • of tho Grammar Sohool Board wrote stating that the Board eoold not accede to the re» quest for a contribution towards repairs to Porter s Avenue and other roads. A request was received from the Volunteer Firo Brigade for more hose, the supply beiag short. It was stated that 110 new hose .had been purohased for eight years. Consideration of the matter was deferred until an estimate of the cost is obtained. Tho Tramways Company wrote forwarding an account for £18 ,5s (including £6 6s 7d for labour, etc.) for the cost of removing a polo at Dominion Road corner. A member remarked that tho money had been easily earned, bat there being no alternative the account was passed. Winstono, Ltd., wrote, staking that they wcra „ not doing any .more cartage over the Board's roads than . the previous year, and asking reconsideration of tho matter of their . three licenses at £5 each. The arrange- '■ ment for last year, was that they paid £7 10s ■ for a general license for the ensuing year on the understanding that all traffio esoecding that amount should bo paid for at the end of tho year at tine rate of Is per load. Is. was resolved to enforce payment of the full tax£ls. Mr. McElwain gave, notice to . move at next meeting that the volunteer fire brigade be increased from ' eight to twelve members. " ,-

NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL'. The . monthly meeting of the Northcot® Borough Council was held on Tuesday, wh&n. there were present: .'-Messrs."' Alex. ' Bruce (Mayor), H. H. Hunt, D. A. Gray, A. E. Greeaslade, J. Broady, Jan. Dyke's, J. B. "' Tonar, P. W. Bolland, and W. N. Rush- ,' brook. A communication from the Treasury Department in connection with tho Council's application for a loan for street improvements was received, and tho town olerk watf to' make the nec«sury application for provisional-approval of the proposed loan ' by the Department. It was resolved to hold a spocial meeting next Tuesday in connection i with • the suggested 'i permanent road works. ; Tho town clerk was instructed to endeavour to arrange for tho Harbour Board members, during their visit of inspection to the various wharves, to meet a deputation: V consisting of the Mayor and Messrs. Tonar,. f Hunt; Gray, and Grecnslade, in connection; • with the Council's sugg-estion to build a sea- " wall for th© reclamation on the western sidif of the North cote Wharf approach, in ordei to make a footpath on; that side of the cutting. It .was resolved ■■ that : Callan's '" road . be immediately put in repair, :in ' accordance / with the report of the borough engineer. The resignation of Captain Low, of the fire bri-> gade, was received, and : tho following ap-. pointments were confirmed:--Captain, Mr. ; , R. H. Petterd; lieutenant, Mr. A. Parrish; * and foreman, Mr. J. G. Jackson. A deputation from the brigade waited upon the Council,- dealing with several matters for the . im- ! , provement of tho brigade, which were refrrred to . the Fire. Committee. It • was docided to instruct • tbe : sanitary; inspector to take action against offenders, who were draining'their sewage on to the streets. Tho Lceral and Finance Committee was instructed : to go into the matter of the cost of. water to- ; , the borough, and to make a recommendation respecting the Birkenhead Borough Council's ' query as to what price the Council':; required to pump water to the Birkenhead reservoir. ; The report of the Finance Committee, which-* , recommended that instructions be given -tar .tho Council's solicitors to prepare the necessary legal documents for fee taking over jo? the waterworks, etc., from tho Waitcmata ' County Council, was adopted.
