BOROUGH COUNCILS.

PARNELL. The ordinary meeting of the Parnell Borough Council, held last/night, was attended by the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Basley), Messrs. K. S. Briggs, P. a. Fowler, C. Woods, R. B. L'usk, W. Johns, G. L. Thompson, .J. R. Lundon, and F. Fitt. ;< St. George's Bay Sewer: Six ratepayers wrote directing attention to the objectionable state of the drain, emptying into St. George's Bay at the junction of King's Drive and St. George's Bay Road. The ■nuisance ' had been accentuated during ■ tne recent northerly weather. The matter was referred to, the inspector of nuisances to report, . r ■ Tuberculosis: The honorary physician to the Maori Boys' and Girls' Schools at Parnell (Dr. Ferguson) wrote in reference to the five cases of tuberculosis reported by him to be existing there. "I should like to say," lie said, that these cases are in no way due ; to any. neglect m the management or hvgienic conditions at these schools, but are far more probably due .to the social conditions and mode of life -of these boys and girls prior to their entrance to the schools. It is well known that Maoris are specially prone to infection by the tubercle bacillus." Dr. Ferguson added that the cases were all of a minor _ character, consisting of enlarged glands m the neck.

MOUNT EDEN. The Mount Eden Borough Council met last night, there being present: The Mayor ■(Mr. 0 Nicholson), Messrs. C. J. Tun'ks, : Chas. Hudson, T. S. Jacka, W. W. Warnock, R. R. Ross, E. H. Potter, J. P. Hobton, R. H. Grudge, W. Woollcy, G. Burns, E. Yates, and J. Davis. f Accounts: The treasurer reported that the district fund account was in debit £589 3s 4d, the various accounts standing as follows: —General £1182 2s sd; trust, ■ £12 9s 4d; total, £1204 lis 9d; less water account, £615 8s sd. - . Assistant Clerk: The Mayor reported that 89 applications had been received for tne; position of assistant borough clerk. These were referred to the Legal and Finance Committee to reduce to 12. ; A" Deputation: A deputation again waited on. the Council urging that it . purchase a piece of laud so as to make a connection between Spring-street and Milton Road. The question was referred to a special committee with power to act. T •- .■'..: NEWMARKET. The ordinary meeting, of'the Newmarket Borough Council, held last evening, was attended by the Mayor (Mr. F. Bennett) and Messrs. W. Edgerly, E. Davis, R. Holmes, H. Kinder, C. Leek, Jas. McColl, ■ and D. Teed. Drainage The following tenders were received for the carrying out of the first sec tion of the borough drainage scheme:— R. Ramp, £387 17s 6d; J. J. McLean, £392 15s lid; J. Larkin, £321 ; ss; May and Gordon, £302 8s 6d. The last-mentioned tender was- accepted. It was decided to '■ ascertain whether the Council had power to carry out house* connections and to charge the house-, holders with the cost. - < Overhead Wires: A copy of the, letter sent out by the Auckland Fire Board point-: ing out the alleged danger to property fromfire through the present overhead 'construe-* tion of the tramway system, was-received,-and it was resolved . to invite the Board's' engineer to confer with the Council on the subject. : . - ;.■ • ■■ i ' Water Consumption: The water consumption in the borough for the past "fortnight ; was reported at 932,000 gallons.
