NAUTICAL INQUIRY.
GERTIE-PENGUIN COLLISION. [BY TELEGRAM. press association.] .-.■ Wellington, Sunday. The nautical inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collision between the steamers Gertie and Penguin off Jackson's Head, on September 3, was continued on Saturday. The .seaman who was at the wheel on the Penguin "aid that while the vessels were running on parallel courses the Gertie turned in towards the Penguin. Captain Stewart reached the bridge three minutes after the second mate rang his bell. If, the Penguin's helm had not been ported, the Gertie would have struck her stem on. Another seaman, who was on the bridge, gave corroborative evidence. . Several passengers also stated that the Gertie suddenly swung in towards the Penguin. The Court's decision will be given on Wednesday.
