BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A meeting of the Auokland Board of Education was held yesterday morning, when there wore present: Messrs. 0. J. Parr (chairman), L. J. Bagnall, G. Edgecumbe, E. 0. Purdio, G. J. Garland, and J. D. O'Donoghue, teacher, Amodeo Bay "aided" School; Miss Janet G. Macindoe, seventh assistant, Parnell; Miss Martha Hattaway, assistant, Alexandra; Miss Daisy W. Herrich, substitute assistant, Manurowa; Alexander Menzies, pupil-teacher, Devonport; Miss Annie Quinn, .pupil-teacher, Devonport; Miss Lulu A. liako, pupil-teacher, Napier-street; and Miss Jbinda-M. Stirling, pupil-teacher, Now Lynn. A' lo Board decided that school committees should bo consulted in regard to proposed appointments as follows:— (sol© charge), Misses H. McGee, A. M. Raglan (£9O), Newton West (£BS). finance: Tho Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts totalling £681 on the administration account, £2196 9s 6d on the building account, and £306 on the manual and technical account The com"uttee also recommended that the sum ot £13 18s should bo tendered in full settlement of the claim of the. Devonport Borough Council for supply, of water by meter to the pubho school. Tho report was adopted. .Technical School Finance: At a previous mooting of the Board fears were expressed that, the finances of tho technical department would bo seriously embarrassed if the proposed reduction in capitation for commercial classes set out in a Departmental circular were persisted in. The secretary now reported that he had written to the Department pointing out the effect of such a reduction. The Inspector-General replied that the circular referred to was issued by the Department with the view of obtaining information bearing on the general question of free secondary education, including in this term certain but not necessarily all of the courses of instruction comprising the curriculum of what are called "clay technical schools." He asked: "Might not the fact that the facilities at these schools for carrying out the courses to which the Department's oircular particularly related . were superior to those provided at secondary schools, be largely due to the fact that the latter had not, generally speaking, felt called upon hitherto to make special provision for such courses? The Board might rest assured that, whatever steps it might bo deemed necessary to take to avoid anything likely to lead to unnecessary and expensive overlapping in connection with secondary and day technical schools, nothing would" bo done without due notice and without due regard to tho arrangements and agreements that might already have been made by controlling .authorities. V The letter Was received, the chairman remarking that it conveyed a reassurance to the Board. Edendale Sohool: No reply having been received from the Minister to a request for a grant equal to the tender for Edendale School building, it was decided to telegraph to the Minister, pointing out that tile matter was one of extreme urgency, and asking for tho full amount of the tender. Teachers' Accommodation: The Department of Education wrote asking for a return showing accommodation at .teachers., residences. The chairman remarked that lie did not know if this return was asked for because of the approach of the general elections or Whether the Department; meant business. Th© Department had been frequently urged provide bathrooms and other conveniences. The return was now beinar prepared. ' Agricultural .i College: The Chairman, referring to the Hamilton Agricultural College proposal and the discussion by Hamilton Borough Council, said the Board had every sympathy with Hamilton m the matter, and the desire of the Board was to secure the erection of an agricultural college at Hamilton. The matter was deferred pending the result of the application for a grant. ~' Waihi Caning Case: The Chairman said the master at "Waihi, exonerated by,the local committee on a charge of excess™ punishment, was a man most highly esteemed by both parents and scholars, and ho (the chairman) was very glad to hear that the committee found there was nothing in the complaints made.
