Da. ObißictoTT h arrived ' from the South yesterday by the Rotoiti. Captain E. Thomas was a, passenger for the' South by the Rotpiti yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Bland Holt and the members of their dramatic company went South yesterday by the West Coat-t steamer. ■Mr. Henry Clay don, of Onehunga, and late of the Union Company's s.s. Kamona, has passed his examination at Lyttelton as, first mate in foreign trade. Mr. Fred. Strange, . formerly of Auckland baa successfully passed his M.E.C.S., England, and L.R.d.P., London, examinations, and has been appointed clinical assistant in the opthalmic department, London Hospital. Mr. V. Rice, secretary to the Auckland Board of Education, who has been granted extended holiday leave, has booked a passage by the s.s. lonic, which is to leave in February next for London. He, expects to "return ~to Auckland by the end of November, 1909. Yesterday he expressed his thanks to the- Board for its vote of appreciation of his past services as secretary, and its generous treatment of his application for leave of absence. Mr. E. R. Ussher, engineer of the Public Works Department, a* Dunedin, retired from his position yesterday after 37 years of continuous service. At times during that period ho has had control of the Canterbury, Otago, and Southland provinces, all a* one. and has occupied the position of district engineer over Otago and Southland. For over 20 years during his connection with the Public Works Department ho has supervised tho construction of practically the whole of the railway lines in Otago and Southland. It is understood that Mr. P. W. Furkitt, at present at Ohakum\ in charge of the North Island Main Trunk line, will succeed Mr. Ussher at Dunedin. \
