“AN EXTRAORDINARY TRIAL.”
WESTPORT PERJURY CHARGE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION'. Hokitika, Saturday. The hearing of the evidence in the Westport perjury charge was concluded today, when Police Inspector Black and accused (Conolly) were under examination. The latter, under severe cross-examination, by Mr. Herdnmn, leading counsel for the prosecution, admitted having told at the Nelson trial seven distinct lies. Mr. Justice Cooper, at the conclusion of the evidence, remarked that this was the most extraordinary trial that had ever taken place in the Dominion, being so full of contradictions. Counsel will address the jury on Monday, and the judge's summing up will take place on Tuesday.
