Mr. S. L. De- Carteret, younger eon of the late Mr. S. J. De Carteret, of Remueni, graduated on June 24 with the degree of bachelor of philosophy at Yale University, U.S.A. Sir Joseph Ward has earnecKhonours in fields other than political (telegraphs our special correspondent in Wellington). In his younger days he was regarded as a very promising oarsman, and about the year 1875 he was one of the crew representing Bluff, which won the principal four-oared race in the first Bluff Regatta, defeating a crack crew from Invercargill. The Bluff crew on that occasion consisted of J. G. Ward (bow), J. L. Cook (No. 2), Tipping (No. 3), and Hunter (stroke). The event is also noteworthy by reason of the fact that that race marked the introduction of sliding seats in racing boats in that part of New Zealand.

Captain John Elwarth, master of the scow Havoc, 'who was taken ill at Nguuguru some weeks ago, suffering from inflammation of the lungs, died on Wednesday night. The officiating clergy were the Rev. Father Meagher, assisted by "the Rev. Pat hers Murphy and Wright. The bridesmaid was Miss Kitty Hay, sister of the bride.
