Mr H. W. Reid, A.S.M., late director of the Zeehar School of Mines, has been appointed from five applicants to the position of director of the Karangahake (School of Mines, caused by the resignation of Mr. R. B. McDuff (telegraphs our Waihi correspondent). Mi. Reid will take control in September.

Much regret is expressed in Otahuhu at the sudden death of Mr. J. Muir, which took place yesterday morning (writes our correspondent). Mr. Muir was in the act of rising from the table when he suddenly -expired. Deceased had taken a prominent part in the social affairs of the township, being at the time of his death president of the Bowling Club and the Mutual Improvement Association, and chairman of the School Committee. He leaves a widow .'and large family.

The Rev. Father Holbrook, of St. Patl'ck's, was presented last evening with an ill actuated address and a, purse of sovereign, on the occasion of his leaving Auckland for Cambridge. The presentation, given bv his parishioners and various friends in Auckland, was made at the Hibernian Hall, Mr. P. J. Nerheny presiding. There was a. large gathering of priests from various'parts of the province, those present including the Rev. Fathers Ke-hoe, Meagher, Furlong, Murphy, Duffy, Tormey. Cahill, f Zana. Brennan, and Broth*. George, of the ' Marist Brothers. The address testified to . the -unflagging zeal which Father Holbrook had shown in promoting the various under- ! takings of the Church, and particularly in . attending to the welfare of the orphans. Father Holbrook. in acknowledging the presentation, which he understood amounted to more than £100, said he exceedingly regretted leaving Auckland, but following his illness earlier in the year he found his strength insufficient for the work of so large a, parish. He had come to Auckland a mere bov. and he had devoted to St. Patrick's six. vears of work, which he hoped had not been without result. An excellent musical programme included several selections by the Cathedral choir. . •
