THE NEWMARKET RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
■ m INQUEST OPENED. Ax inqueit was opened before the city Coroner (Mr. T. Gresham) yesterday, touching the death of the man S. P. McMahon, a resident of Onehunga, and a member of the permanent way staff, who was killed at Newmarket on Wednesday morning as the result of being knocked down by a train from Kaipara. The train was being backed at the time, and MtMahon was struck by the van and fatally injwed.
Evidence of identification was given, and the inquiry was adjourned until this morning to permit of the attendance of a representative of the Railway Department, the guard, the engine-driver, and fireman of the train in question. Mr. T. Cotter is .watching the case on behalf of the relatives of the deceased.
