SEW FERRY BUILDINGS.

QUESTION OF EXPENSE. A FRESH DESIGN SUGGESTED. A. sub'-commttke's report ni presented tc yesterday's meeting of the Harbour Board recommending that fresh tenders be invited for the new. ferry buildings ; that. Oatnaru stone be substituted for Appolo Bay stone; that alternate tenders be called "for several different grades of Oainaru stone and Sydney stone, and tho building in reinforced concrete. Mr. Entrican: What about Coromandel granite? Mr. Hutchison : Coromandel granite will bo used for the. base. It would be too expensive to cany it farther. Mr. Entrican thought it would be better that instead of calling fresh tenders, the old . tenderers should he asked tc give alternative prices for the different stones now specified, the old tenders to be returned unopened. He moved that the matter be referred back to the sub-com-mittee. .* Mr. Napier said the investment of some £70,000 in this building would not pay interest, and he was not in favour of expending more than £50,000. They were told it was utterly impossible to get the building erected 'for £50,000, but he thought tho Board might consider the advisableness of facing the building with etone, and using pressed brick elsewhere. That would mean a saving of some £15,000.

Mr. Hutchison: This design is not suitable for brick.

Mi*. Maefarlane: A rresh design could be obtained on a cheaper scale. Mr. Heather agreed with this statement. The first proposal was for £50,000, and now they were speaking of £80,000. Mr. Kneen: Ido not think tho Board should pay so much regard to cheapness. Wo want a, building worthy of the Board, and not stucco. Let us set the city an example. Look at the cathedrals our ancestors built for us!

Mr. Napier: Slave labour built them. Mr. Kneen: Let us depart from ordinary commercial lines. The motion was carried.
