NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tub ordinary meeting of tho Northcote Borough Council was held on Wednesday night, there being present: Messrs. A. Bruce (Mayor), H. H. Hunt, J. B. Tonar, W. N. Rushbrook, Geo. Fraser, A. E. Greenslade, Jas. Dykes, P. W. Holland,'J. Broady, and I). A. Gray. Sanitary Contract: Two tenders were received for the sanitary contract for three years. After consideration, these wero referred to the Streets Committee. Both tenders involved an increase of at least 50 per cent, upon the price recently paid. Carting: The tender of 8.. H. Clow for carting for 12 months, being' tho lowest, was accepted. Engineer: Eight applications for the position ot consulting engineer to the borough were received. These wore reduced to two, and the Mayor ■ and Messrs. Fraser, ' Rusnbrook, and Hunt were appointed to institute inquiries, and make a recommendation to the next meeting. Lake Bathing: It was resolved to cooperate with the Devonport Borough Council to : prevent bathing in La?ce Takapuna, whence the Council's water supply is drawn, and authority was given to have noticeboards put up warning people against bathing there. Fire Brigade: It was decided to convene a public meeting for July 1, at the Northcote Hall, for the purpose of enrolling volunteers and forming a fire brigade for Northcote. The secretary of the Fire Brigades' Association wrote offering assistance. Birkenhead Water Supply: An inquiryfrom the Birkenhead Borough Council as to whether the Northcote Council would he prepared to pump water to Bagot's Hill (the j site of the proposed Birkenhead reservoir), and the charge required for such service, was referred to the Council in committee, to be dealt with when the Council has re-' ceived a full statement of the waterworks account, and other necessary details in connection with the waterworks, which have not so far been taken over from the Waitemata County Council. Domain Board: The Council agreed to act as a domain board for the purpose of administering the reserve of three acres at Northcote Point. Committees: On the motion of Mr. Gray, seconded by Mr. Hunt, the resolution appointing the whole of the members of tho Council as the Works and Finance Committees was rescinded. This was opposed by Messrs. Fraser, Holland, and Greenslade. On the motion of Mr. Gray, Messrs. Broady, ! Bolland, Tonar, Eraser, and Gray were ap- j pointed a Streets and Works Committee, j Mr. Gray then moved, and Mr. Broady se- j conded, " That the Finance and Legal Committee consist of .Messrs. Hunt., Dykes, Rnshbrook, Bruce, and Gray." This was lost, an amendment by Messrs. Fraser and Tonar being carried by seven to two, appointing the Mayor, Messrs. Greenslade, Hunt, Dykes, and Rnshbrook to. constitute this committee.

Works: On the motion of Mr. Greenslade, it was resolved, " J. hat no works, other than of an urgent character, be. undertaken, unless authorised and passed by the Council; that a-foreman of works bo appointed : that the town clerk immediately inform tho foreman 1 of works, by letter, of all works authorised by the Council, the foreman of works to be held responsible for the proper carrying out -of such works; that the foreman submit monthly, for tho information of tho Council, a time-sheet in connection with all work so carried out, or in progress, and tho locality of the same." It was decided to invite applications- for the position- 1 of foreman immediately. By-laws: It was resolved to meet in committee on the 23rd inst. for the purpose of framing by-laws.
