AN ENGINEER'S DEATH.
[BY telegraph.—PßESS ASSOCIATION.] CiraisxcHUßCH, Thursday. . Me. J. Gilroy, chief engineer of the Union Company's steamer Kaituna, who had both feet cut off by being knocked down and run over •by a railway truck in Lyttelton station yard on Monday afternoon, died in the casualty ward yesterday. Mr. Gilroy, who was 54 years of age, was a native of East Lothian, and had been in New Zealand about 35 years. Ho was one of the longest-service engineers in the Union Company's employ, having joined the,company about 25 years ago. Mr. Gilroy served in a number of the company's steamers, and was engineer of the Kanieri, Southern Cross, Mahinapua, Herald, Corinna, Taieri, and latterly of the Kaituna. He was a widower, and leaves two grown-up sons." An inquest was held this- afternoon, and a verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attachable to anybody. A rider was added that tho Railway Department should be recommended to station 1 a man on the wharf side of the railway crossing .to warn pedestrians and others of the dangers of shunting operations.
