THE MAIL SERVICES.
NEED FOR IMPROVEMENT.
THE VANCOUVER ROUTE.
"There is one matter that has not been mentioned," said Mr. W. F. Massey, Leader of the Opposition, when speaking at the Chamber of Commerce dinner last night, "and that is the position we have got into regarding the mail services. You know they are not as good as when the 'Frisco service was running. We were then in a better position than Australia, but now we are in a worse position; the whole thing has changed utterly. The -step is a retrograde one, and I am surprised that the mercantile community takes the matter so quietly. It seems to me that a great deal more might be done in regard to the connection with the Vancouver route. I have been informed by business men that it takes a week or 10 days sometimes to get the mails here from Fiji, and then, unless specially addressed, they are not forwarded by that route. Parliament voted £20,000 "for the Vancouver route, and I am sure Parliament would not object to anything reasonable in the way of increased expenditure to secure a proper and a more efficient service." (Applause.)
