The barquentine l'eudle Hill is discharging hei cargo of coal from Newcastle at the Sugar Work*, theism. On completion the vessel berths at the •Railway Wlinrf to load timber for Sydney direct. THE TRAMP STEAMER. The ocean tramp steamer is faring badly at the present time (says the New York Maritime. Register of April 29). The prevailing low freight;have made their employment unprofitable and the use of these cargo-carriers is being continually narrowed. The regular lines now control the larger part of the ocean-carrying trade, and the increasing absorption of this trade by the*" lines has progressed so far that, in certain or the seaports the ocean shipments are entirely controlled by them to the exclusion of the independent cargo-carrier. The tramp steamer a* it convenience, for supplementing the need at times of additional tonnage by (lie regular lines and ' for special purpose* is useful, but its use generally is becoming,' 'more and more limited. This class of vessel is in fact a purely speculative proposition. The continued output, of them keeps afloat « large amount, of unnecessary tonnage, which tends to reduce freight rates to the disadvantage of investment in shipping. The tramp steamer is too often heavily burdened by mortgages to the builders extending over very long periods. The competition among shipbuilders to secure contracts is largely responsible tor this. But. this method of financing these vessels is attended with much risk. It is a handicap to the successful operation of the vessel, making th* question of profitable earnings, if any. a matter of doubt, particularly as the ocean-carrying trade : Is being centralised into regular lines, a process which is continually narrowing the field in which the tramp steamer may operate to the extent of its elimination very largely from the trade in the future.
