The charge referred to an affair on the*' Jessie Burns, a cargo .steamer, unloading at the Railway Wharf, on Saturday last, when hoi Zani, a Greek sailor, was found wounded so severely that he had to be removed to the hospital. Elias Deniarisos, a Greek sailor on the Jessie Burn?, stated, through an interpreter, that lie was watchman on the steamer from six p.m. on the 50th to six a.m. on May 31. He saw Zimmerman coming aboard abou' 9.50 with another man. Later Zani came on deck and spoke to the boatswain. Zimmerman followed, calling Zani names. Zani said to Zimmerman, "I will let you know to-morrow what I am when you ate sober." Zimmerman got out the knife and stabbed Zani. Fall Haase said to Zani, who moved towards him, "Don't come any closer, or I'll stab you." The next tiling witness saw was another man (Nauzaak) holding Zani down. Zimmerman did the stabbing. The hearing was adjourned till to-mor-row, for the appearance of Zani.
