London, June '6. The Grand Cross of St. Michael ami St. George has been conferred on the Earl of Dudley to mark his appointment as Governor-General of Australia.

In accepting the freedom of Bristol, the Earl of Dudley assured the Mayor and City Council that he regarded the gift as a graceful compliment to the Commonwealth. Pie 'would do his best to promote a feeling of sympathy between all parts of the Empire. In an address to. the Bristol Chamber of Commerce the Governor-General-elect remarked that many English industries could only flourish if they acted together without petty jealousies, in order to combat huge trusts and foreign competition. He believed Bristol was admirably situated to secure a larger share of Australian trade.
