At a Masonic banquet at Palm erst on North reference was made to the activity of the local lodges in the early days in endeavouring to promote land f-ettlement. It seems that in 1887 an association was formed by the two lodges to take up land under the special settlement regulation. The. idea was to secure a block of some 6000 acres on the "central railway route/' as the Main Trunk line was then called, and on this land to settle? 40 brethren. The scheme was viewed with favour by the Minister for Lands. Information was obtained as to the blocks available, and the matter was being pushed forward when a change of Government intencnod, and the? new Lands Minister held different views from his predecessor. He was avers* to the scheme, and there was no practical result.
