The Marine Department of the Dominion, following the piecedont of the British Board of Trade, has decided that, on and after the first day of 1909, no candidate for, a certificate of proficiency as master or mate may present himself for examination until he has obtained the certificate of the St. John Ambulance Association, as a. proof of his ability to render "first aid to the injured."- Special arrangements are being made by which candidates may attend the lecture's at any port of the. Commonwealth of Australia or the Dominion of New Zealand, but the cost will be less if they can attend the course at any one centre. ■ Those resident in Auckland should, if possible, enrol for the present season, the first lecture of which will be given next Friday evening.
