SOUTHERN SUPREME COURTS.

[BY TKLKGBAI'H.—I'RKSS ' ASSOCIATION.] WANGA.vcr, 'Thursday. At the Supreme Court to-day James Stapleton was .sentenced to two years' hard labour for theft, and was declared an habitual criminal. The civil action, George Hutchison, ex-M.P., v. Muldrock, is now proceeding. The case arises out of the power of attorney given by plaintiff to defendant when he left for South Africa in 1900. Muldrock managed defendant's farm at Waverley, two sections of which are native land, and are still held under" restrictions. The property was leased by Mr. Hutchison to Mr. Hazelhurst. When the former left the Dominion, Mr.Hazelhurst gave up the lease, assigning the same to Muldrock, who has held the property since. The main point at issue is whether or not Muldrock is still plaintiff's trustee, or was he released from that position by a document given him in South Africa? Plaintiff asks that defendant be declared trustee. • WELLINGTON, Thursday. At the Supreme Court Herbert Edward Hamilton Bird, charged with stealing goods and money to the value of £71 15s From Thomas Major Shore, was found not guilty, and was discharged.
