A new and'interesting addition to tho aquarium at Opawa has recently been made by the importation of a number of Japanese fish, including the rare and beautiful paradise fish and the prolific minnow, which swarms in all the rice fields of Japan <says the Christchurch Press). As the food of this fish consists of the eggs of mosquitoes-it is much prized, and large numbers tune beer, sent to Italy for introduction into the swamps, whilst even,- German steamer now takes a supply of these little mosquito-eat-ing fish. For New Zealand they will doubtless also . prove a valuable food for trout, and on account of their active habits and pretty blue eyes will be an interesting object for aquariums. The total number of all varieties in the shipment amounted to several hundred, yet not a single loss occurred on the voyage, special cans having been furnished.
