Among the competitors in the Martinborough bicycle road race la.st week was fine of the Chinese of that town. More than ordinary interest was taken in the competitor, and a large crowd awaited the arrival of " John," who came in some time after the race , had been won. The Chinaman 'was well settled soon after the start, but he never gave in, and plugged along the whole distance, which he covered in two hours and twenty minutes. For his meritorious work, " John" was decorated with a- leather medal containing a silver button centre, from the young fellows of the town, who regarded it as a good piece of fun. The Chinaman was so pleased with the present that he took the donors along and " shouted " for them.
