FIGHTING A FIRE.
The following Interesting figures concerning' the cost of fighting a large fire, and the value of the implements used, have been supplied by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Sydney, At the fire at Messrs. W. W. Campbell's premises, in Clarence and Kent Streets, 14 stations- were represented, and 123 men, including 20 ' officers, attended. Fifteen engines, valued at- £10,000, were used, and nearly one mile and a-half of hose, with 23 deliveries, played on the buildings for three horns and .20 minutes, in which time 445.61? gallons of water were drawn from the Centennial Park reservoir for the purpose of extinguishing the flames; Two 1 tons and a-half of coal were used in the steamers, five gallons of petrol in the motors, and five gallons of engine oil. The total value of the appliances used by the brigade was £15^000.
