• VOLUNTEERING NEWS.

BY SENTINEL. The members of No. 2 Company Garrison Artillery will fire for Mrs. Ferguson's trophy to-morrow. ; • A meeting of Foxton residents ie to be held shortly to consider the advisable nets of forming' a volunteer corps in that town. To-morrow (Saturday) at the Waihi rifle range the second-class shots and the Ohinemuri No. 3 Rifles will fire the second competition for Mr. Palmer's trophy, the ranges being 200 yds and 500 yds, seven shots at each distance. The Victoria Rifles completed their first match for Sergeant Boyle's trophy on Wednesday. The ranges were 600 yds and 700vds, with ten shots at each range. Private. J. B. Preston came out on top, with a total score of 88; his brother, Private J. J. Preston, being next, with 86. ! ' Writing to Captain J. T. Bosworth from | Port Arthur, Major W. S. Patterson stat- ' ed that he had been looking over the ce- [ fences at that place, and he enclosed a | photo, of Watch Hill, on which guns are | placed in every conceivable position. Major i Patterson is expected to return to Auck- | lind in about six weeks' time. The I'ukekohe Mounted Rifles, who are ! at present in camp at Pukekohe, will hold a sports tournament, in conjunction with the local band, to-morrow afternoon, and a large number of entries have been received for all the events, so that some interesting competitions should be witnessed. The Railway Department are running a special train, and excursion fares will be .charged. •, An experiment has been made by , the local volunteer corps (writes our Coromandel correspondent) in regard to holding the weekly parade on Saturday, with satisfactory results. Many of the men are away during the week and cannot attend on any other evening. Last Saturday evening 26 men put in an appearance, and were put through their drill by Lieutenant Cat land. Captain G. S. Richardson, Director of Ordnance, has completed the work of awarding marks for the work of the garrison and field artillery corps of New Zealand during the past year. It appears that the. crack artillery corps in the Dominion are the " B" and " D" Batteries of Field Artillery, of Dunedin and Wellington, respectively, and No. 2 Company of the Wellington Division of Garrison Artillery (Petone Navals). An ex-Dunedin volunteer, now in Wellington, writing to a Dunedin pressman, says: —" The spread of military education (of which Colonel Robin has always been about the keenest promoter in New Zealand) is really remarkable up this way. To an ex-Otago man it is astonishing to find that every second officer of the Wellington Garrison is a thoroughly educated soldier. A day in the camp at Johnsonville would have been a revelation to Otago officers, good as one or two of them are." On May 23 the Franklin Mounted Rifles will go into camp at Clevedon, under Captain A. G. McKenzie, for their annual 10 days' training. This company has a large membership, and as some of the junior officers and a large number of the men have not long since joined the corps a busy time may be expected. A suggestion has been vmado that during this encampment the Pukekohe men should make an attack on Clevedon, but the proposal has not yet been discussed. Should it eventuate the Government will be asked to allow each side the use of one of the A Battery's guns.

' A prominent Wellington military officer suggests that the following, taken from the Bengal military regulations, might be posted up in every volunteer orderly-room in New Zealand — Officers and non-com-missioned; officers arc not only to enforce by command, byt to encourage by example the energetic discharge of duty and the steady endurance and privation inseparable from military service.' The officer informed a Times inquirer that this legend was prominently displayed 111 camp and tent at the recent Easter manoeuvres in the Canterbury district.

Without doubt (says a Wellington paper) the recent Easter manoeuvres have been the means of providing a. great deal of valuable experience, and conducted as they were under service conditions have also shown a number of weak points, both in organisation and transportation, which should be carefully considered and remedied if possible. Many of the men went short of food, not because the food had not been supplied by the Department was plenty and to spare—but because in a number of cases the officers responsible .for the drawing of the supplies were not fully conversant with their duties, and apparently failed to make out their indents for the* men's rations, which, consequently, were not drawn. ■Many of the men wore also short of straw, although a plentiful supply had been railed down by the Department. - The chief difficulty seems to have been a general lack of system. The work was left to everyone without any definite orders being issued, and consequently a certain amount of confusion followed. This, it is stilted, could have been obviated if a conference of officers had been held, and the plan of campaign set out in detail, and each officer given definite instructions as iff what should be done.
