THE TYPHOID OUTBREAK.

CONDITIONS AT COX'S CREEK. Ix connection with the recent outbreak of typhoid at Richmond, in the vicinity of Cox's Creek, a visit of' inspection has been > paid to the locality by the Mayor of Grey Lvnu'(Mr. Geo. Savers), accompanied by the district health officer (Dr. Purdy), Messrs'. A. Donald and W. J. Holdsworth (members of the Council), and tho town clerk and sanitary inspector. It was found that the outfall of the city sewer, at the back of the Marist Brothers'. College, is in a bad state of repair, and that the open sower leading from the outfall to Cox's Creek also needs attention, owing to an accumulation of vegetable growth and general debris. The city engineer has already put on a number of men to clean out this sewer. ' The other city sewer, running up from" the Bayfield side of Cox's Creek, is also receiving the attention of the city authorities. The premises at winch various industries are carried on, and which were referred to at the last meeting of the Borough Council, were'also inspected, and were found to be in a satisfactory condi- • tion. The Queen-street extension and the sawdust tip were likewise examined, : and Dr. Purdy expressed the opinion that no 1 insanitary conditions existed in connection therewith. - Mr. Savers states that he is strongly of opinion that the Borough Council, in conjunction with the City Council,- slwuld at once carry out temporary improvements to 1 .the existing sewer emptying into Cox's Creek. He considers that a 12in . pipe should be laid up to the mouth of'each of , the two city sewers, and that these should > be earned down to meet the outfall of the i Grey Lynn sewer, whence a larger pipe > should be laid to carry the sewage : out beyond the bridge 'at the sawmill. '• He will submit a report, embodying this ■ suggestion, to a meeting of the Borough ! Council 011 Monday evening. He will also suggest that the Council obtain a bacterioi logical examination of the milk supply of > the borough. '
