GREATER AUCKLAND.

EX-MAYORS AS ALDERMEN. AN INTERESTING SUGGESTION. A ,lkttjui was received from the secretary of the Municipal Association at last night's meeting .! of the City Council, asking for 'any remit.* which the Council desired to bring up at the next conference, to be 'field in Wellington in July next. The names of the Council's delegates were also asked for. In connection with this letter, the Mayor said the suggestion had been made to him that day that it was desirable that the exMayors of the city should' not dissociate themselves entirely from the municipal life of the city. He concurred with this idea, and thought that under the Greater' Auckland scheme ex-Mayors should be appointed as aldermen, or receive some other appropriate designation, and thus he enabled to take part iii the deliberations of the Greater Auckland Council. That- council would probably consist of 30 councillors, who would be greatly assisted in their work hymen who had had an intimate knowledge of municipal affairs. The suggestion nad emanated from a man of repute in the city, and- he ,(the Mayor) thought it would be in the best, interests of the city if the services of ex-Mayors were retained in some form or other.

M'r. Court also approved of the suggestion, and, after a slight discussion, the question was referred, together question of othet remits to the conference, to the Finance Committee.
