DEATH OF A NEW ZEALAND JOURNALIST.

The death, from heart failure, is announced of Mr. Rous-Marten, a New Zealand journalist, who has been resident in London for some years. Though The late Mr. Rous-Marten had resided in England for the last. 18 years, where he acted as London correspondent of ( the HERALD, ho was widely known in New Zealand, and the news of his death will be received with great regret by a large circle of friends. Mr. Rous-Marten was born in England. He came, to Now Zealand when he was about 16 years of age, and would bo about 65 at the time of his death. Ho lived for some years in Southland, •_ where his father, who had come out; to New Zealand for his health, had taken up land. About the year 1876. Mr. Rous-Marten went to "Wellington and joined the literary staff of the Evening Post, becoming successively subeditor anil editor. He also rilled the editorial chair of tho New Zealand Times. In 1890 he went to England as London correspondent for tire HeuaLß and several other New Zealand papers. He was a man of varied accomplishments, and in addition to being a capable journalist he was a fine musical critic. He also possessed _ a wide knowledge of locomotive engineering and railway matters generally, having in his earlier years been connected with the Railway Department in New Zealand. He was a frequent contributor to the engineering papers, and was regarded as an authority on railway questions. The late Mr. Rous-Mar-ten was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and also of the Royal Meteorological Society. The Transactions of these societies have received a number of valuable contributions from his pen. He married Miss Emily Hicksen. of Wellington, and his wife survives him. There were no children of the marriage.
