CATTLE DISEASE AT LEVIN.
OUTBREAK OF COWPOX.
[BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN" CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Saturday. Dairy farmers at Levin are much concerned over the appearance of some disease amongst their stock. Mr. Reid, of the Stock Department, has been investigating the matter, and thinks the malady is what is called cowpox, and he lias taken away certain samples of milk to be examined. The dryness of the season is advanced as the cause, and in order to run no risk from the spread thorough disinfection both of the animal and the milker is absolute'/ necessary. The disease is highly contagious. Sheep are also affected, but the symptoms are somewhat, different in their case. Great irritation of the head occurs, which swells in bad cases to a great size. In their pain the animals rub their heads against each other or against a post, or even on the ground, and evince every symptom of great suffering. Seeing the seriousness of this disease and the enormous damage if might do throughout the whole district, every cure is being taken to prevent it becoming widespread.
