THE MAORI WELCOME TO THE FLEET.
Sir.— disagree entirely with Mr. Upton, end regret that he takes the view stated in bis letter. He too, evidently misunderstands the attitude, ot the American people, who do not take up the position of having "no dealings" with coloured races. They do insist that alien emigration shall bo under restrictive control, which is a different, matter. To advocate that no person with a brown skin should take part in the welcome to the American fleet would not only debar numerous Englishmen, but give just came of offence to a most deserving people. We Britishers certainly have no cause to pray that the Lord should give us a good conceit of ourselves. The Maoris are awakening to a realisation of their need to take part us the pakeha civilisation, in some of its best aspects. Toe long we have helped to ruin them with the worst, This movement should have the warm approval and help of all good citizens, and every tendency in this direction should be strengthened. Then' co-operation in the- welcome to the American fleet; should be sought, and heartily welcomed, and would bo much appreciated by our vl^t^, BXCH V
Sir -At present many ideas are being put forward in order to make a fitting reception to welcome the American fleet. Alight i suggest, in view of a Maori demonstration, that a monster gathering of representatives of the northern tribes be helu at One-tree Hill Domain, a spot associated with warfare in the past. "If permission were obtained, a pa with all its appurtences could be built, and mimic battle engaged in—an education to the rising generation, and intensely interesting to our visitors. The advantage of the place I mention is that it is within easydistance of all surroundirg suburbs. Onehunga. Marianne Josks.
