MEETINGS.

LIBERAL AND LABOUR FEDERATION. A MEETING of the Remuera branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation of New Zealand was held in the schoolroom, Brighton Road, on Tuesday evening, the vice-presi-dent, Mr. Erni Bond, in the chair. There, was a full attendance of members. Mr. Steele resigned the secretaryship, owing to leaving thc. district. The resignation was accepted with regret, and a vote of thank.? to Mr. Steele for his services was passed. A discussion took place on the Education and Health Departments. Messrs. Erni Bond, Hoare, Craig, S. Bond. Snodgrass, and others spoke of the importance of these Departments, and considered the administraby the Hon. Geo. Fowlds successful. In view of the coming elections preliminary arrangements were made for the organisation of the Liberal party in the Remuera district. AUCKLAND CHESS CLUB. The annual meeting of the Auckland Chess Club was held on Monday, the 13th inst., ■ and considering it was an "off" evening, there was a good muster of members. Mr. Alfred Hosking, sen., vice-president, presided. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The following ofti cers v/ero elected for the ensuing year: — Patron, the Mayor of Auckland (Mr. A. M. Myers); president, Mr. A. Hosking: vicepresidents, the Rev. A. Miller and Mr. J. F. Sloman; secretary, Mr. N. D. McKay; treasurer, Mr. F. W. Smith; auditor. Mr. A. E. Layland; handicapper, Mr. A. Lelievre; Management Committee, Messrs. ". Harvey, 11. Priestley, .7. M. Lennox, C. Little, G. Jakins, A Lelievre, and S. White. The last season's tourney prizes were then distributed as follows: Championship, first prize (donated by ex-president J. A. Sneddon), the Rev. A. Miller: Mr. .1. C. Grierson, 2; handicap, first prize. H. Hermis, 1; Mr. A. E. Layland, 2. It was re-olved t'iia there be a combined sealed handicap and championship tourney for the coming season. The revival of the old "ladder" competition was strongly supported, and it was decided that the handicapper should arrange the players in order of strength, such order to bo adhered to in any contest in which the club played as a body. The question of a telegraphic match with a Southern club was left to the committee to deal with as soon as possible. Negotiations will probabljsobe opened with Wellington early in May. It was decided to hold practice matches at once in the leading openings, with a view of preparing for the season's tourneys, and also to give inexperienced players a knowledge of book play. The first practice match will take place on Thursday next, 23rd inst., and the opening will be the Ruy Lopez. The Rev. A. Miller kindly offered to donate his chess library to the club for the. benefit of young players. A long discussion, ensued on the status and qualifications of honorary members. Many of these make very full use of their. playing privileges, and there was a strong feeling among the members present that such players should become full members, It was finally resolved that the privileges of honorary membership should be extended to players living outside a radius of five miles from the Post Office, and to such members and adherents who very rarely play in the club, but who from a desire to support tho game pay their subscriptions yearly. In order to specially encourage young players to join tho club it was decided to admit them as members at, a reduced fee. The sons of members will also be admitted as members at half fee. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs. Hosking. McKay, and Smith for their official services in the past. A like compliment was also paid to Mr. Connolly, the chess editor of the Herald. EPSOM BAPTIST CHURCH.

The first annual meeting and soiree of the Epsom Baptist Church was held on Tuesday evening. The Rev. T. A. Williams presided at the after-meeting, and was supported by tho Revs. A. North, Sueyd, Woolley, and the Rev. Knowles-Kempton (the now pastor of the Tabernacle. The secretary (Mr. H. C. Osmond) read the annual report, which showed that there were 120 scholars and 13 teachers on the Sunday-school roll, and that tho different agencies connected with tho church were in a more or leas vigorous condition. Vocal items were rendered by Mrs. Kirwood and Miss Newton, Mr, R. Bigelow accompanying the soloists. Interesting and instructive addresses were give by the Revs. A. North and Knowles-Kempton. A stall of fancy goods, which were on sale, resulted in good returns. MANGERE ROAD BOARD. At the monthly meeting of the Mangere Road Board the following were present,: Messrs. Jas. Turk (chairman). E. J. Ellett, J. Glasgow, W. Knight, and A. Kenwood. Vehicular By-laws: A number of persons having infringed the spirt of the vehicular by-law, it was resolved that the foreman make demands for the fees due. and, if necessary, take action against offenders. Overhanging Trees: Certain residents not having removed dangerous overhanging trees, as requested, it was decided to legally notify them to cut down the sane at once. Stock Licenses: The ranger having been supplied with a list of all stock licenses issued, it was resolved that he adhere strictly to the regulations, and permit no transfers of licenses. , . Arrears of Rates: The clerk announced arrears of rates amounting to £64. It was resolved that the 10 per cent, penalty beadded to all rate demands unpaid after oUtii 'The Quarry: It was decided to charge Is per load in future for all scoria taken from the Mangere quarry. Tamaki Canal: The Manukau-Tamaki Canal Association asked for assistance towards furthering the project, It was resolved to inform the association that the hoard had contributed £5 already. . Foreman's Report: The foreman reported having carried out improvements to the OrahuKu and Robertson's Roads, besides attending to a number of culverts and water channels. The road in the worst condition now was Ihumaruo Road, and tins lie attended to see to during the coining month. Encroaching Fence: For a time past the alleged encroachment of a fence at, liastie s corner has caused much argument on the Hoard. In connection With the dimculty Messrs. Wvnvard and Purchas wrote on behalf of the owner of the fence, stating that according to the plan supplied by the Lands Office, the fence was in correct position. Probably the fence opposite was the cause of the "trouble, but only a proper survey would solve the difficulty. It was resolved that further inquiry be made.

UNKHUNGA METHODIST YOUNG j MEN'S CLUB. There was a large attendance of members at the club-room on Tuesday evening, when Mr A. J. Pople presided, over the annual meeting of the Onehunga Methodist Young Men's Club. The annual report and balancesheet, showing the past year to have.bean most successful, and that a credo glance of £14 remained, were read and adopted. It was decided to open the season on Jridoy, May 1, with a social. Officers for the incoming year were elected as follows;-Patron, the Rev. S. Gibson; vice-patrons, Messrs. 1L Douglass and Geo. At the annual meeting of the Ponsonby Shakespeare and Rhetoric Club. lied ao the club room. Leys Institute, the president, Mr. Maxwell Walker, in the chair the hon. secretory gave a brief review ot the work done by the club during its three years existence, stating that some 20 complete plays of ShakeBDeare, Goldsmith. Sheridan, Stephen Phillms Moliere, and Rostand, and numerous miscellaneous selections had been presented, to the evident enjoyment of well-sustained audiences. The financial report showed a (satisfactory credit balance. Mr. Maxwell Walker was re-elected president, and Mr. 1. IT Wells vice-president. Messrs. E. 1. Hart and H. Hemus were elected vice-presidents, and Mr. Oliver Sinclair lion, secretary and treasurer. It was resolved to open the season on the 23rd itist.. Shakespeare's birthday, with "The Taming of the Shrew." ALL SAINTS' MEN'S INSTITUTE. There was a good attendance of members at the first meeting of the All Saints' Men's Institute on Tuesday night. The syllabus for the year consists of debates, impromptu speeches, readings, mock court, magazine evening, and an evening with the poets. A well-attended meeting of the Northcote branch of the Liberal and Labcur Federation was held at the Foresters' Hall, Birkenhead, last evening, and was presided over by Mr. A. Keyes. Several now members were elected. A report was received from the delegates to the Waitemata Electorate Council of the federation, and their action was approved. Resolutions were passed urging the council to proceed forthwith with the selection of a candidate to contest Hie Waiteinula seat in the Government interest. Messrs. A. Keys and .1.
