COST OF EDUCATION.

NEW BUILDINGS VOTE. " OUT AT KNEES AND ELBOWS." TtfK statement of receipts and expenditure for 1907, within the Auckland education district, included in a report of the Board's proceedings for the year, showed a credit balance of £19,939 17s 4d. Administration and teachers' salaries absorbed £138.370 10s Id, leaving a debit balance of £1084 17s Bd, the amount authorised for expenditure having been £137,285 12s sd. Maintenance of buildings 'was the next heaviest item, and accounts for £14.655 18s Id, leaving a credit balance of £1293 15s sd. New buildings cost £12,248 13s 2d, which exceeded the authorised amount by £2377 6s lOd. Other amounts were the manual and technical account £9753 15s 9d (debit £1028 lis 8d), secondary education £4996 17s ?«0d (credit £92 4s), and manual and technical buildings £1865 8s (credit £9*53 9s). At the beginning of the year there was a balance in hand of £13,429 Is 9d, including the donation of £10,000 from the trustees of the Auckland Savings Bank towards the new Technical College, which carried a subsidy of £ for £. The debit balance on the manual and technical account was covered by claims for capitation earned during 1907, but not receivable until this year. "Under the authority of the Minister, the school buildings maintenance account was charged with the sum of £8471 9s lOd, which had been expended on new school buildings. It was resolved to forward the report to the Minister for Education as usual, and to point out at the same time that the Board was always "out at knees and elbows" in respect of its new buildings.
