J. Burgess. The Magistrate's (Joint business was transacted by the local justices. The entertainment and dance in the Tererenga schoolhouse on Saturday evening, for the benefit of the widow and family of the late Alfred Carl sen, of Kennedy Bay, was a great success. There was a large attendance, and the programme "was of a varied character, giving general satisfaction. Much credit is due to Miss [~ Clark (the Whangapoua school teacher), who promoted and carried out the entertainment. It is expected that about £6 will be netted. A social gathering was held in the Methodist Church to bKi farewell to Mr. Martvn. who is take up the home mission work of Northern Wairoa. Musical items were rendered, and Mr. M'artyn gave some interesting notes on his travels in Australia. Addresses were delivered by Messrs. Blackmore and Cleave, and refreshments were provided by the ladies. A fountain pen. suitably inscribed, which came too late for he meeting, was presented to Mr. Martvn on the following morning. At a meeting of the Cadet Rifle Range Committee last evening (Mr. Jas. Murray presiding), it' was decided that the medals { won at the recent competition should be I presented to the successful competitors in j the Miners' Union Hall on- school commit- ! tee election night, and it was resolved to take up a collection at the same, time on behalf of the challenge shield fund. The medals will be presented to the boys by Major Kenrick.
