PROPOSED EXHIBITION.

DISCUSSION OF DETAILS.

SHOPKEEPERS TO BE CANVASSED.

A further meeting of the General Committee appointed last week under the auspices of the Auckland Industrial Association, to organise an exhibition of New Zealand products in Auckland, was held at the office of Mr. J. H. Mackie yesterday afternoon. Mr., Arch. Clark, chairman of the association, presided, and there was a fair attendance of business men. The Chairman remarked that at the previous meeting the members had favoured a shop-window display. They had now to arrange matters, and elect sub-committees to carry out the proposals. Letters had been received from Christchurch and Wellington approving of the idea of holding an exhibition, and especially a shop-window display. Mr. H. M. Cohen, of Christ-church, wrote suggesting that, a. small exhibition should be held in Auckland at the time of the American fleet's visit. A good deal of divergence of opinion was exhibited during the subsequent discussion. Some of the members thought that the visit of the fleet would create so much interest that the exhibition would be overshadowed. It was urged, however, that the fleet's visit would create such an amount of interest, and induce such a huge assemblage of people in Auckland, that the exhibition at such a, time would prove a great success. The shopkeepers and business men generally, however, would have to take the matter up enthusiastically and work right through. :• Eventually, Mr. Andrew Bell moved, " That the exhibition should be held during the visit of the American fleet." "Mr. S. Harbutt seconded the motion. An amendment was moved by Mr. B. Buttle, and seconded by Mr. G. Fraser, " That a canvass of all the shopkeepers should be made, in order to secure their opinion as to the most suitable date for the exhibition." The voting was equal, and the chairman save his casting vote for the amendment. He remarked that this would not delay the matter, but probably secure more unanimity and support. It was suggested that shopkeepers should display goods in their windows other than those they generally dealt in, but this proposal did not find any favour. The following were appointed a committee to canvass the various trades : —Messrs. H. Dearslev and G. A. Coles (bootmakers), H. C. Clark, B. Buttle, J. C. Macky or T. Macky (drapers). G. C. Garlick (furniture), G. Court and H. Lamb (drapers, with power to add to their number for Newton) ; J. Wiseman, J. Ormiston, and others (saddlery),, G. Fraser and A. Bell (ironmongery), G. Fraser (engineering), S. Harbutt and A. Tucker (grocers), G. Aickin (chemists), and A. Atkin (carriage-building). The committee will also interview the manufacturers in order to see what support they will give. A Finance Committee, consisting l of Messrs. J. C. Macky, G. C. Garlick, A. C. Caugbey, G. Fraser, B. Buttle, L. J. Bagnail, J." M. Mennie, J Fraser, and S. J. Nathan, was appointed. „ It was also decided to take steps to form a, guarantee fund. The meeting then adjourned to May 5, at two p.m.
