MANUKAU HARBOUR.

QUESTION OF CONTROL. A PROPOSED BILL. The question of the control of the Manukau Harbour, which has been in abeyance for some time, was revived at yesterday's meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board. M'r. W. J. Napier said that the question of the formation of a local board at Onehunga■• had been fully gone into. If the Onehunga residents were in a position to undertake control no objection, he took it, would be offered to them forming a separate body. It should be borne in mind, however, at the same time, that the business of the two ports was so intermingled that it wasjbetter that it should be managed by one authority. He understood that Onehunga could not find the means without imposing crushing taxation on the shipping and cargo. Moreover, they could get no endowments that could produce any revenue for the next 25 years. Everything had been placed before the Minister for Marine, and he understood that the latter now thought that as there was some slight difference of opinion those who desired to have control should do so by means of a private Bill. He (the speaker) thought that would be .-< very good idea. He would move, "That the solicitors be instructed to prepare and submit to the Board a private Bill, to enable the Auckland Harbour Board to secure the control of the Manukau Harbour, the details to be arranged by a sub-committee, consisting of the chairman, Messrs. Macfarlane, Hutchison, Heather, and Napier." The motion was carried.
