MOUNT EDEN. The adjourned ordinary meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr. O. Nicholson), Messrs. C. J. Tunks, T. S. Jacka, E. H. Potter, R. R. Ross, W. W. Warnock;. .T. Woolley, S. G. Burns, E. Yates, J. Davis, and J. P. Hooton. Epsom Drainage: It was resolved, on the motion of the Mayor, with regard to the question of Epsom drainage, that the foreman should ascertain if a cave were available in the vicinity of the Epsom and Mount Albert Roads, and opposite Robinson's property, at a cost not exceeding £20. Cartage Contract: It was resolved to call for tenders for the cartage for the ensuing year, Mr. Warnock expressing an opinion at the same time that the Council should undertake this work and effect a saving of £200 or £300 per annum. The Railway Bridge: The Hon. Geo. Fowlds forwarded a letter from the Minister for Railways with reference to the Council's representations that the Mount Eden bridge should bo formed to the full width of the road. It was pointed out that the Council was under a misapprehension in regard to the nature of the work that had recently been unci -taken. The bridge was not being reconstructed, but merely temporarily strengthened, at the expense of the Tramways Company, and on their behalf. Considerable discussion followed, and the bridge in its present state was condemned as being dangerous. The Mayor said he did not agree with this view. As to the widening he pointed out that the necessary alterations of the approaches alone were estimated to cost some £3500. It was finally resolved to reopen the question with the-Minister for Railways, and request a definite reply as to what was to be done. Street Numbers: The Chief Postmaster wrote pointing out that there was a great difficulty in delivering letters in Mount Eden Road, owing to its great length, and the fact that there were no street numbers. The Council resolved to inform the postal authorities, in reply, that Dominion Road was within the precincts of the borough, there having been numerous complaints that letters so addressed failed to reach their destination. Damage from Blasting: N. Lester and G. E. Broomhall wrote complaining about damage to their respective properties through blasting operations. Both letters were referred to the contractor. Extension of Water Supply : A number of ratepayers in and about Queen's Avenue petitioned the Council to extend the water mains to the locality. It was resolved, That the necessary steps be taken to obtain a water loan for the remainder of the district." „ r , . , Street Lighting: The Mayor submitted a new scheme of street lighting for the two main roads, by which the lamps would be hung on brackets attached to the telegraph poles, it being contended that the system of lighting from lamp-posts was not so effective, owing to telegraph poles and other obstructions interfering with a clear view.
