A fine new steamer for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand has just been launched at Port Glasgow. The Waitemata, as she has been named, is some 430 ft in length, is capable of carrying about 8,500 tons deadweight, and is destined to be employed in the trade between New Zealand, Calcutta, and Fiji. She will possess all the latest appliances for the rapid handling of cargo. The Waitemata is a somewhat similar steamer to the well-known Aparima, of the Union Company's fleet. THE CANADIAN MAIL. THE DEVON. The steamer Devon, Captain Brown, arrived from Britain, Capetown, and Australia yesterday morning, and after inspection, berthed at the Queen-street Wharf to discharge her cargo of general merchandise. The steamer, which left Liverpool or. February 8, called at Capetown, Melbourne, and Sydney, meeting with an uneventful voyage. She' will leave for the South about the end of this week. AN OLD SHIP. Lying in the port of Londcn just now, awaiting sale by auction, is the sailing ship Mersey, which for some years past has been engaged in i an unusual trade. Her business has been the transport of coolie labourers from Calcutta to the West Indies, an occupation which entails* numerous obligations upon the shipowner in regard to equipment and manning. She would carry a double crew, for example, and four doctors Wooden platforms ranged round the side of the vessel, formed the steeping quarters of her duslcy passengers.
