AUCKLAND LABOUR MARKET.

PROSPEROUS CONDITIONS.

[»£ TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT j

Wellington, Sunday. The Labour Department's Journal for April has the following notes on the labour market in Auckland: —

Trade and labour in this district are reported to be very satisfactory, and conditions are favourable for a continuance of this • state of prosperity for some time to come.

The building trade is still satisfactory. There are very few men out of work in any of its branches. All union carpenters and joiners are employed, and there are only one bricklayer, one stonemason, six painters, registered on the Department's books as out of work. In the boot trade there is no change to report from last month. The factories are busy, and employers complain of the difficulty they experience in getting workers, especially machinists and learners. The engineering trade is fairly busy. The shops are working full-handed, and the indications are in. favour of an improvement in this trade.' The clothing trade factories are busy, and some are ■working overtime. The ordertailoring trade is in a normal condition. Some shops are veiy busy, whilst in others full time is not being worked. No tradesmen are registered as being out of work. This is always.recognised as being a quiet month in trade, being between seasons. The dressmaking and millinery trades are also in a normal condition. Some shops are busy, and others are working overtime. The carriage builders are busy, no good tradesmen being out of work. The saddle' and harness-making trade and the brick and pottery works are fairly bus}-. The furniture trade is working full-handed, but there was a falling-ofT in orders during the month. Retail trade is apparently in a very satisfactory condition, and good business is being done in all its various blanches. No complaints have been heard from tradesmen re slackness of trade. Unskilled labour is in a very satisfactory condition, and so far little or no trouble has been experienced in placing suitable men in work. During the period dealt with 162 men have been sent to work, viz., 25 married and 137 single men. There is no indication at present of any increase in the number of applicants for work.
