AGREEMENTS SIGNED. TERMS OF SETTLEMENT. PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS. By Telegraph Frets Association.—Copyright (Received April 12. 5.57 p.m.) Swnkt, April 11. Tub wharf labourers' strike has practically being settled. (Received April 12, 7.40 m.) Bvon April 11. The only jioint precluding a settlement of the strike last night was in connection with the Merchant Service Guild.- but this was arranged to-day when agreements were signed and ratified by both parties. 'Ilia coastal steamers will resume th«r running forthwith. •i'ho settlement provides that the coast* companies shall carry out the agreement with the men taken on during the strike! those formerly employed to return a* opportunity offers. The Newcastle Company is to have the right to .-etain its present employees at Newcastle and Mr provided coastal rates jure paid in neii of a weekly wage. Preference to unionist* is conceded, to ope: ate after the present employees join the union.
The engineers agree that coastal owner? may, at their discretion, fill wore than six steamers between the three fleets with engineers not exceeding 12, the remainder of the steamers to be manned solely by members of the Institute of Marine Engineers, who, also, are to have preference in future vacancies. The present engineers and employees will be retained.
After the termination of the present agreements the Merchant Service Guild has stipulated that, till steamers now out of commission sha'l be manned by members of the guild, wtio shall also till vacancies as they occur.
The agreement fixes the number of permanent hands on tho various wharves.
