A big langi, which lasted over two weeks, took place at Kaikohe, Bay of Islands, in connection with the death of the late chieflainess, Marara Bird, wife of W. Bird, of Muripara, and eldest daughter of Hemi Wi Hongi, Kaikohe. Large crowds of natives from all parts of the district assembled to mourn, deceased being a direct descendant of Hongi "the Great." She held a position in the native school, Kaikohe, for two years, as an assistant teacher, but was compelled to resign, owing to illness. The schoolchildren sang hymns daring the burial ceremony, which was conducted by the Rev. Matthew Kapa. Mr. Bent, the Victorian Premier, is disappointed with the Stat* revenue returns, and said that he expected £100,000 more. Ho attributes the shrinkage to the milways, the land Lax,: and the ircome tax.
