KING'S DRIVE.

Sir,-A writer recently drew attention to the shameful condition of the King's Drive, and I wish to endorse his remarks. This roadway has now become the recognised outlet for the eastern portion of ParnelJ, and us such is used by large numbers daily. The Parnell portion is well-formed, and in a sufficient state of repair, except about 100 yards of pathway, which is impassable:' in wet weather, owing to its having become covered by washings from the hillside. A drain is necessary, and a few cartloads of scoria. The town portion has no footpath, and the roadway is impassable after rain. If, as the previous writer suggests, the lumber were removed, a good footpath could be formed along the greater portion of the Drive. It may be held that the city portion of the road is only temporary, as the Harbour Board intend reclaiming outside of it, but that is no reason why the many using it daily should suffer. I also wish, sir, to draw your attention to the dangerous corner at the junction of King's Drive and Breakwater Road. There is no footpath here, and consequently vehicles are driven right up to the railway fence; in fact, the corner posts of the fence have been recently carried away by some vehicle. To make matters worse, carters have absolutely no regard for the rule as to the right of road. I have seen pedestrians and cyclists rounding this corner on their way to town, and on their correct side, almost run into by carts driven alongside the fence from the opposite direction, as far over on their wrong side as possible. This is a. great danger, and a matter the traffic inspector should look to. I hope the Parnell Council will attend to their portion of the Drive, and the Harbour Board or City Council to their portion. If responsibility by these latter bodies is disputed, it is hard that the ratepayers should suffer. These public bodies should come to some understanding regarding this now busy artery. - '■• ; Pabnellite.
