STRANDED TYSER LINER.
STAR OF JAPAN.
HEAVY CARGO FOR NEW ZEALAND. I The cabled information published in the Hehalp yesterday to the effect that the Tyser liner Star of Japan was stranded on a reef at St. Cyprian's Bay caused some stir in Auckland, in view of the fact that about half of the steamer's cargo is consigned to New Zealand ports. The vague intimation that the vessel has been badly "stranded" is rather misleading, and does not throw much light on the actual nature of the disaster, as "stranding" is usually associated with "beaching," whsreas the Star of Japan has run aground on a reef, which is a very dif- I ferent thing. The local agents for the vessel, Messrs Heather, Roberton, and Co., of Custom-street, have as yet received no further news than that contained in the cable, but the heavy premium of 80 guineas charged for reinsurance is distinctly ominous, and may be taken as an indication of a bad accident. The Star of Japan was a new vessel, and her present trip is only her fourth since she was turned out from the dockyards. She traded between the Old Country and Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand. Her tonnage is 10,000, and 5000 or 6000 tons of her cargo, which consists of general merchandise, was consigned to New Zealand ports. The exact nature of the cargo is not known, but it is quite possible that it included consignments of material and plant both for the Railway Wharf and the Tramway Company, as advantage is taken .by consignors to send miscellaneous cargo by boats coming the direct route. NO CARGO FOR DUNEDIN. [by TELEGRAPH. — press association.] Donemn, Friday. In connection with the stranding of the Star of Japan, the local agents state that the cargo consisted of general merchandise for Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Napier, Wellington and Bluff, but none for Lyttelton or Dunedin.
