THAMES AND WAIHI MINES. GOLD PURCHASES AND EXPORTS. [Hi* TKi.EORAPH.— OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Friday. Tub statutory return of gold purchased by the local banks was rend at the Borough Council meeting last night. The Bank of New Zealand purchased during the month of March 6510z 3dwt from the borough mines, and 115oz 15dwt from those in the county, the Bank of New South Wales purchasing 41oz ldwt from the county mines. The Collector of Customs, Auckland, reported that during the quarter ended March 31 the amount of gold exported from Thames initios was as 'follows:—Thames Borough. 31550z ldwt, value £13.234; Thames County, 17920z 9dwt, value £7361; , duty, £315 10s 3d and £179 4s lid respectively.. Wellington, in reply to the Council's resolution endorsing the application of the Waihi Consolidated Gold Mining Company for a Government subsidy towards the cost of sinking the Shaft on the company's property-to test the reet system at greater depth. This stated that after careful consideration the Minister for Mines had come to the conclusion that the work wau not one towards which a grant from the public funds could properly ho made. The annual meeting of the Waihi School of Mines Students' Association was held in the School of Mines last evening, Mr. Stewart presiding. The balance-sheet showed £11 (8 Id in hand, and, owing to the success of last year's conversazione, it was decided to, hold a similar function on a larger scale at an early date. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr. Kenrick (re-elect-ed); vice-president, Mr. Stewart; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Burnell (re-elected); committee, Messrs. Daley, Cooney, Goosman, and Langford. OLD HAURAKI. The manager, of the Old Hauraki mine telegraphed yesterday to the effect that he had secured 101b of specimens from the slope on Legge's reef, above the 160 ft level. OTAGO DREDGING RETURSN. The following dredging returns have been reported: —Waikaia . 180oz; Masterton, 940z 4-dwt; Mamih.erikia, 620z; Mystery Flat, 470z 3dwt.; Koputai, 470z ldwt; Hc-ssey, 28oz sdwt; Central Charlton, 17oz 16dwt; Kuru, 16oz; Muddy Creek, 13oz 14dwt ; Charlton Creek, 12oz: Lady Roxburgh. 12oz 6dwt; Molyneaux Kohinoor, 9oz 2dwt. NOTES. The manager of the Waihi Extended mine reports that at No. 4 level there is no improvement in the stone. In the intermediate level good stone is still coming to hand. The new reef in the face of the north drive in the Tairua Broken Hills mine is 3ft wide, and of kindly appearance, while the value of the ore shows a slight improvement. In the north drive on No. 1 reef the latter looks well, and good payable ore is coming to hand. In the Coronation mine the main reef in the winze shows signs of improvement. On the hangingwall there is a nice band of quartz, about Ift wide, which, carries nice mineral?. Several pans of dirt were tried, and they showed a tail of gold equal to £2 per ton. The bottom level crosscut in the Ngatiawa mine at the Great Barrier going south has been continued through a well-defined body of quartz, intermixed with kindly-looking minerals. "We are now 18ft in the reef, without any defined wall," says the manager in 1 his latest report, " and the lode appears to improve as we advance towards the hanging wall." • A good find of gold was reported last week from Micawber mine, Mount Tara, Buchan (Vic), where 100 miners are engaged. While driving along the line of roof they found it intersected by a slide, the other side of which was found to be sensationally rich. A cap full of stuff was .taken to the surface and dollied, and it yielded at the rate of about lOOoz to the ton.
