LIGHTING OF BUSH FIRES.
RESPONSIBILITY OF FARMERS. [by TELEGRAPH. —PRESS association.] Dannevjrkk, Thursday. A CASE of interest to farmers was decided by Mr. McCarthy to-day. During the recent bush fires in the Weber district one settler tok advantage of the wind to light a fire to fight one which was approaching. After three days the wind changed and the fires followed the original course, extending to the property neighbouring the one on which the fire was lit, and causing, damage valued to the extent of £299 19s. ' After a. lengthy hearing, lasting all day, the magistrate gave , judgment, for £100 damages, holding that the farmer lighting a fire on the adjoining property to plaintiff was responsible, although there were many other fires in the district.
