Paeroa, ; Thursday. Mr./Alex. Mackay walked into the river last night when about to cross the bridge over the Ohincmuri River, evidently in the darkness mistaking the river for the bridge. Ho was rescued by Messrs. W. Heape, D. Millar, and C. T. Gibson, and was little the worse for bis experience. But for the ' prompt action of. the rescuers he would probably have been drowned as the river was in ilood end running very swiftly at the time. f :•. • * i The prize at the cadet camp held at Omaha, given by Colonel Loveday for tlio best, kept tent in the Ohinemuri Battalion, \v;t.i Avon by a tent from Paeroa, which secured 48 points out of. a possible 50, Wailii being second with 46 'points. The prize given by the Thames non-commissioned officers for the best kept tent in the Thames Battalion, was won by the Waiokaraka school with 42 points. OTAHUHU. [from our own correspondent.] A concert in aid oftbe funds of the Tennis Olub took place on Wednesday evening, when a full house rewarded the efforts of the promoters. An excellent programme was presented, at the conclusion of which the visitors were the guests of the Tennis Club at supper, a dance following.., The Mutual Improvement Association intend resuming operations very shortly, a meeting being held recently to elect a new committee. Mr. A. Sturges was requested to accept the presidency, Mr. R. B. Todd was elected vice-president, Mrs. West treasurer, and the Rev. .11. Mason, Mrs. Mason, Miss A. Somerville, Messrs. J. Mtiir, E. West, 11. J. Hall, and F. Lippiatt, will form the committee, the office of secretary will bo ; filled at the first meeting of the committee, when the programme for the ensuing year will be formulated.
