Johnson, who whs remanded from tin- 19lh for the probation officer's report, on a charge of having stolen a swag valued at 30s, the property of Frank Dennan, was brought up before Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday, for sentence. The probation officer stated that lie knew nothing about, accused's character, but lie. was one of the kind of men who " knocked up" a big cheque in the country and then came to town and associated with the criminal class until his money was

gone. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up lor sentence when called upon. A prohibition order was issued against him. He was also ordered to pay the i costs, amounting to £3 12s 6d, and 10s to the man lie sold the swag to. BOYS IN TROUBLE. Two boys were charged with the theft of a tin of benzine, the property of the owner of the launch Rewa. It would appear from the evidence that the boys requisitioned a dingey and pulled over to the launch, the cabin of which they broke into. In turn they visited several other craft, returning with a number of fishing lines, their evident intention being to go fishing. They were unable to operate the Rewa's engines, and so returned to the shore. The boys partly confessed their guilt, and were ' remanded for the probation officer's report. "QUITE COLD." Dennis Costcllo was charged with driving a carriage after sunset without lights. Defendant pleaded that his candle had gone out, but that the lamp was "quite warm" when the constable stopped him. The constable, however, said the lamp was "quite cold." but was lit, after he called defendant's attention to the fact that he was driving without a light. Defendant was fined £1 and costs 7s. Alex. Stewart, charged with driving through Remuera after sunset without having lights on his trap, was fined 5s without costs. ALLEGED OF TRAM TICKETS. A young man named Victor Ehrman was charged with stealing, on or about March 11, a quantity of tram tickets, valued at £20 0s 3d, "the property of his employers, the Auckland Electric Tramways Company. Mr. Singer, who appeared for the accused, asked for a . week's remand, and the police offering no objection the remand was granted. BACK TO BEENHAM. John Hall, a 16-year-old lad, was charged with absconding from the Levin Industrial School, with stealing on or about February 1 a bicycle valued at £10, the property of C. Johnston, and with stealing on February 27, at Ellerslie, a bicycle valued at £10, the property of Benjamin Deeley. Accused pleaded guilty, and was ordered to return to the Burnham Industrial School. Harry Watson and Thomas Lyons were charged that, being cabdrivers, they failed to keep within 10ft of their cabs when on the stand. Watson explained that he only went into the Waverley Hotel to have a drink before the hotel closed. Lyons did not appear. Both defendants were fined 5s and costs.

Three youths were each charged with failing to observe the rule of the road while riding bicycles at Newton, and one was further charged with riding a bicycle after sunset without a light. Defendants explained that one side of the road was covered with metal. They were each convicted, one being discharged, while the others were fined 5s each. Orpheus Smith was fined 5s and costs 7s for allowing his horse to ,wander at large. THE HOURS OF WORK. Elizabeth Hewitt was charged with keeping an employee at work longer than the statutory time. Mr. Lindsay, on behalf of the' Labour Department, did not press for a heavy penalty, and a conviction was therefore recorded, defendant being fined 5s without, costs.

BIRTH REGISTRATION. Norman Anderson and Charlotte Falbaum were each fined 5s and costs for failing to register the birth of their respective children.
