Dr. Valiktine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, left for the South yesterday by the Rarawa. Mr John Smart, of Clyde, will contest the Tuapeka seat at the general election in the Opposition interest. .Mr. W. G. Scatter, an old colonist, who came to Gisborne in 1878, died there yesterday, after an operation for appendicitis. The death is announced of Mr. W. ('. Maddison, chairman of the. Hastings School Committee, ex-member of the Education .Board and Borough Council, and a leading man in local affairs. Mr. Howell Williams, who has had charge of the Kopu post office for the last eight, years, has resigned his position, and intends taking iip his residence in Auckland. Miss S. Cox, of Kopu, has taken his place in the post office. Mr. Thomas Hodgson, manager of the Northern Boot, and Shoe Company, leaves to-day for Wellington to join a special deputation which is to wait noon the Commissioner of Customs (Hon. J. A. Millar) respecting various matters connected with the Customs tariff. Mr. Northcroft, S.M.. presided for the last time at the Hamilton Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, and before the commencement of proceedings Mr. Swarbrick. on behalf of the Hamilton Bar, thanked Mr. Northcroft for the courtesy and kindness they had experienced at his hands. Mr. Northcroft made a fitting reply. Mr. James Shiel, who is leaving Dunedin to settle, in England, was farewelled yesterday by the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society. He had been an active member of the'committee for 17 years, and was president in 1897. Opportunity was also taken to wish bon voyage to Messrs. Hazlett and Pattulo, past vice-presidents, who are about to visit the Motherland. Mi. Norman Whyte, secretary of the - Onehuuga Sawmilling Company, was presented by the directors of that company with a handsome writing-desk, on tin* occasion of his marriage to Miss Alice- Fallwell, of Auckland. He was also presented with a solid silver entree dish by the employees of the mill. The wedding took place on Tuesday at the Epsom Presbyterian Chinch.
